Interviews with teachers about their Christmas

Hi, we´ve asked a few teachers about how they spend their Christmas. We wish you a pleasant reading.

Mgr. Jozef Kačenga

  • What does Christmas mean to you ?

Christmas means to me first of all peace, well-being, presence of my closest family and shutdown after a year-long stress.

  • How do you like spending them ?

Of course, I spend them preparing for the Christmas Eve. With my wife, we have divided roles after all these years and my specialty is that my son and I decorate a Christmas tree and cook sauerkraut.

  • Do you usually have a traditional dinner or is it somehow special?

We have the usual Christmas Eve dinner, we have wafers with honey and garlic, apple, walnuts, sauerkraut, classic potato salad with fried fish file. And of course some cakes and other goodies.

  • What is your favourite film during Christmas time ?

I think that favorite film at Christmas time for women is ‘Three Nuts for Cinderella’ with Libuša Šafránková. And basically I don’t enjoy television, I prefer time spending with a good book and soaking up the Christmas atmosphere, especially peace and quiet.

Ing. Alena Hőlczová

  • What does Christmas mean to you ?

Christmas for me means some kind of rest, holiday but the most important thing for me is the time spent with my family.

  • How do you like spending them ?

Probably at home. But I always go for at least one day to the village called Staré vody where I was born. My Christmas can´t be without it.

  • Do you usually have a traditional dinner or is it somehow special?

We stick to the tradition which means sauerkraut, fish, potato salad and some cakes.

  • What is your favourite film during Christmas time ?

Favourite film probably’ Three Nuts for Cinderella’. I think I’ll watch it every Christmas.

RNDr. Michaela Kesselová

  • What does Christmas mean to you?

Christmas, for me, is a time to celebrate the birth of  Jesus Christ. But most importantly, it reminds us that Jesus Christ was born to save our souls from our sins. It is a joyous event of the Savior’s birth.

  • How do you like spending them ?

Mostly at home with my family. And, of course, we are also connected with all the loved ones who live on the other side of the world like my brother in Brisbane. At home, we didn’t give gifts to each other for a long time. In this time, we should be happy that the savior was born, take a rest and realize what it means to be born to die for someone. People can’t imagine it that easily.

  • Do you usually have a traditional dinner or is it somehow special?

Our dinner is a bit different. When we were little, we used to eat classic dishes for dinner like cabbage soup, salad and fried fish file. But now we don’t eat fried food, so we only have salmon with vegetables. Our traditional habit is to put banknotes and coins under the plate, which symbolizes – according to the tradition – to make enough money. Main tradition is, that soon before Christmas season, we start working on the weather calendar for the next year. We were doing this for many years. From Lucia (13.12) to Christmas Eve (24.12), we are watching the weather outside. Every day (12 days as well as months of the year) we watch and write down on the paper, what was the weather like in the morning, at lunch and also in the evening. Every one day represents one month. And why three times? Because we have thirty days. First decade shows us, that how the weather was in the morning, the same weather will be at the beginning of that month. Also, how it was for lunch means how it will be in the middle of the month and evening weather represents the end of the month. And it really works, it has worked out for the last six years.

  • What is your favourite film during Christmas time?

My favorite Christmas movie is from the year 1973. It is a wonderful movie called ‘Three Nuts for Cinderella’ with Libuša Šafránková and Pavol Trávníček.

Mgr. Ingrid Jančiarová, MBA

  • What does Christmas mean to you ?

Christmas means a lot to me. It is the time of the year when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Actually, it is his birthday but unfortunately many people do not look at this holiday from this point of view.

  • How do you like spending them ?

I spend them with my closest family as well as with my sister’s family, who lives in Martin.

  • Do you usually have a traditional dinner or is it somehow special?

We do have a traditional dinner. However, my dad is a meat lover and he has to have a pork ‚schnitzel‘ instead of fish, otherwise Christmas dinner wouldn’t count for him.

  • What is your favourite film during the Christmas time ?

My favorite Christmas film is definitely ‚Holiday‘. I’ve seen it about 4 times and I still love it. I wish you a happy and blessed Christmas time!
